This book was entertaining at times, but the questions I kept coming back to in my mind was, "why am I reading this book again?"? The book is similar to what you'd get if you published a bunch of twitter posts and connected them with proper sentences. You'll hear about his toothaches, the girl who watches him from her bedroom window, the string of jobs he has held and random news clippings related to the Netherlands.

Again, I laughed out loud a dozen times or so but it wasn't gripping and unless you have absolutely nothing else to read and are in Amsterdam (like we were), I wouldn't recommend this book. If you're interested in finding out what it's like to live in Amsterdam, there are probably better books out there because "My 'Dam Life" focuses mostly on the trials and tribulations of the author.

This book started out very funny. It was witty, amusing, and drew me in. However, towards the end the book started to seem more and more whiny and repetitive. The author often makes references to poor writing of the text itself and also about how horrible his life is. Both simply detracted from the novel and should probably have been left out. Overall though, it was still an enjoyable light read.

Book Description

Sean Condon has moved to Amsterdam. He got married, and he's unemployed (what's worse, so is his wife). Sean is back and funnier than ever, this time exploring the strange habits of the Dutch. He also keeps a watchful and wonderfully self-deprecating eye on the whole strange business of writing about yourself doing, well, nothing much, in this post-modern age. Sean's uncanny ability to find the absurd in everyday life misses nothing and My `Dam Life will strike a side-splitting chord with anyone who has ever been unemployed, been married or tried not to be deported from a foreign land.
