For some reason I always seem to find Japanese literature very lyrical, almost poetic, and Naoko struck me as being intensely lyrical, although I really couldn't say way. The novel certainly has a very interesting premise - a man has to come to terms with losing his wife in a coach crash that his daughter survived, only to realise that maybe his wife's soul has been transferred to his daughter. It's certainly a very 'Japanese' premise, and it works exceedingly well. The relationship between the husband and his daughter / wife (the Naoko of the title), is very well wryly observed and does not go down an obvious route. If you're looking for something slightly different this this is definitely recommended.
