"Nicholas Nickleby" , as with most of Charles Dickens' work, is fiction based on fact. In 1838 Dickens visited a number of the cheap boarding schools of England. The conditions were deplorable at many with injuries, including blindness, and death among the students.

In the original preface, Dickens, with foresight, denied that any character in the book was based upon a real person. He was sued for libel and threatened by various schoolmasters.

In the preface to the 1848 edition, Dicken states: "There were, then, a good many cheap Yorkshire schools in existence. There are a few now."

"Nicholas Nickleby" was first published in a 20 part serial in 1838.
