It all starts when Nick asks Norah to be his girlfriend for five minutes. He only needs five minutes to avoid his ex-girlfriend, who’s just walked in to his band’s show. With a new guy. And then, with one kiss, Nick and Norah are off on an adventure set against the backdrop of New York City—and smack in the middle of all the joy, anxiety, confusion, and excitement of a first date.

This he said/she said romance told by YA stars Rachel Cohn and David Levithan is a sexy, funny roller coaster of a story about one date over one very long night, with two teenagers, both recovering from broken hearts, who are just trying to figure out who they want to be—and where the next great band is playing.

Told in alternating chapters, teeming with music references, humor, angst, and endearing side characters, this is a love story you’ll wish were your very own. Working together for the first time, Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have combined forces to create a book that is sure to grab readers of all ages and never let them go.

I did like the love story, especially from the moment Nick calls his own cell phone, but the cussing was too much... even for me, a (proud) foulmouthed person myself :P I tried to keep count of how many times the characters use the word "fucking" or "fuck" and got lost after 10 pages or less. The English language is not that rich in cussing world (if you can be rich in that) and unfortunately you can't use "fucking" so many times in a 182-pages book and walk away unscathed.

It's not realistic… and even if teenagers speak like that in the real world, I don't need to read it in a book. Everybody cusses; everybody uses the word "fuck" for time to time… The younger much more frequently than they should… but Nick, Norah and co. weren't talking as upper/middle-class teenagers going to study in Brown; they were rude, vulgar and so, so tasteless. Were they really from New Jersey? The way they talked reminded me of the TV serie The Wire. I don't think Nick and Norah were cops from Baltimore, weren't they? fO.o

I won't make any comment about the sexual content of the book. I'm a prude, I know, but normally I have no problem with sexually active teenagers, but the direction the scene in the Marriott Maquis' ice room took was a bit over-the-top for a YA book, I think (even if I liked it :P).

Anyway, even though it's a great love story, could have been written a bit more careful. There are a couple of good quotes about life, universe and everything... The music is supposed to be a big theme in this book, but I didn't know most of the references or understand the whole punk stuff, so it wasn't that interesting. What can I do? I'm a moron in music, sorry :P

BTW, I do like the movie, although the story is quite... ok, a lot different... and I don't remember the people cussing so much in the movie fO.o

First single. Fucking brilliant. Perhaps the most fucking brilliant song ever written. Because they nailed it. That’s what everyone wants. Not 24-7 hot wet sex. Not a marriage that lasts a hundred years. Not a Porsche or a blow job or a million-dollar crib. No. They wanna hold your hand. They have such a feeling that they can’t hide. Every single successful love song of the past fifty years can be traced back to ‘I Wanna Hold Your Hand.’ And every single successful love story has those unbearable and unbearably exciting moments of hand-holding. Trust me. I’ve thought a lot about this.”

  • Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist

An edgy story of love gone wrong and love gone right, told from two points of view.

  • Really cool story, told from the opposing viewpoints of Nick and Norah, as they're accidental date takes them down a twisting road of discovery.
