Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch had it all. But now he’s back in his own rough, tough past without even the clothes he was standing up in when the lightning struck…

Living in the past is hard. Dying in the past is incredibly easy. But he must survive, because he has a job to do. He must track down a murderer, teach his younger self how to be a good copper and change the outcome of a bloody rebellion.

There’s a problem: if he wins, he’s got no wife, no child, no future…

A Discworld Tale of One City, with a full chorus of street urchins, ladies of negotiable affection, rebels, secret policemen and other children of the revolution.

Truth! Justice! Freedom! And a Hard-boiled Egg!

  • A comforting way of death

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett 368pp, Doubleday, £17.99 Terry Pratchett, like TS Eliot's Webster, has always been much possessed by death. The short biography he used to have on his book jackets began with the information that he was born in 1948 and ... (read full critics)

  • Brilliant

Love Pratchett. Love Vimes. Love Nobby Nobbs - you can almost smell him. Very clever and unstintingly diverting.

Discworld, Ank Morpork. Commander Vimes is about to arrest Carcer in the Unseen University magic library... when they are brought back to 30 years in the past. Everything has still to happen and, although Vimes only wants to get back, they both can't help but living there ...meeting the young themselves perhaps and messing up everything. But history always finds a way. Fascinating.

  • Despite not being in total accord with the social and political implications of this book, it is a damn great read.
And young Vetinari is a bloody genius.

  • Read This Book

Do it. This is, quite simply, the greatest thing Terry Pratchett ever wrote - and that is saying something, because the man is a literary genius. Do it. This is, quite simply, the greatest thing Terry Pratchett ever wrote - and that is saying something, because the man is a literary genius. The story is moving and powerful while still retaining the satirical hilarity that Discworld fans expect, and the characters are vivid and likeable (not to mention memorable). Vimes is just the tip of the iceberg.

Read it now, or spend the rest of your life not knowing how amazing this book was.

  • It is a tough call, but maybe this is my favourite Terry Pratchett book. The story is amazing, the cultural hints are a lot and very tongue-in-cheek and the irony is always there. Absolutely fascinating.
