Marc Augé prosegue la sua "antropologia del quotidiano" iniziata con "Un etnologo nel metrò" e proseguita in "Ville e tenute", esplorando i nonluoghi, cioè quegli spazi dell'anonimato ogni giorno più numerosi e frequentati da individui simili ma soli. Nonluoghi sono sia le infrastrutture per il trasporto veloce (autostrade, stazioni, aeroporti) sia i mezzi stessi di trasporto (automobili, treni, aerei). Sono nonluoghi i supermercati, le grandi catene alberghiere con le loro camere intercambiabili, ma anche i campi profughi dove sono parcheggiati a tempo indeterminato i rifugiati da guerre e miserie. Il nonluogo è il contrario di una dimora, di una residenza, di un luogo nel senso comune del termine. E al suo anonimato, paradossalmente, si accede solo fornendo una prova della propria identità: passaporto, carta di credito... Nel proporci un'antropologia della "surmodernità", Augé ci introduce anche a una etnologia della solitudine.
