Delizioso!

Se avessi saputo prima quanto delizioso fosse questo romanzo non avrei aspettato così tanto prima di leggerlo. E invece non l'ho preso in mano finché, alcuni anni fa, un'amica me lo consigliò caldamente.

Se avessi saputo prima quanto delizioso fosse questo romanzo non avrei aspettato così tanto prima di leggerlo. E invece non l'ho preso in mano finché, alcuni anni fa, un'amica me lo consigliò caldamente.
Ora che l'ho affrontato anche in inglese, posso affermare con certezza che vale veramente la pena leggerlo.
La sottile ironia di Jane Austen ha qui, come non mai, terreno fertile, nel rappresentare minutamente e con arguzia una meravigliosa "parodia" del genere gotico.
I personaggi di Northanger Abbey sono eccellentemente delineati, i Thorpe non meno dei Morland, gli Allen non meno dei Tilney. E la scrittura frizzante, pungente, a volte tenera a volte acutamente ironica, rende piacevole ogni singola pagina.
In conclusione, credo che Northanger Abbey valga la pena di essere letto almeno tanto quanto vale la pena leggere Pride and Prejudice o uno qualsiasi degli altri scritti della Austen; e in più, vi consiglio di dedicare un'ora e mezza alla visione dello sceneggiato per la TV realizzato dalla BBC nel 2007, protagonisti Felicity Jones e J.J. Feild: molto fedele allo spirito del romanzo e davvero piacevole a vedersi.

Come tutti i libri di Jane Austen sono rapita dal suo modo di scrivere... Scanzonatorio, comico, coinvolgente... Ti fa rivivere l'epoca che racconta i personaggi, gli stili di vita.. Northanger Abbey non è da meno...

E' stato il primo libro della Austen che ho letto, e quello in cui la sua ironia mi sembra più esplicita. In questa rilettura in lingua originale mi sono goduta anche l'audiolibro, splendidamente interpretato e liberamente scaricabile qui:

'Northanger Abbey' is the story of the young and naive Catherine Morland and her venture into the complexities of adult social life. It takes a tongue-in-cheek view of a girl's ideas of romance and adventure formed by reading Gothic novels, and how, with a series of very entertaining episodes that result in anti-climaxes, Catherine realises that real life is different from fiction. Not my favourite Jane Austen's book, but quite entertaining anyway.
