  • I wish they didn't feel the need to have quite such pat lessons at the end, but otherwise great.

In NurtureShock:New Thinking About Children, Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman have brought together all the new research on children and their learning and development. They write about children and lying, children and language acquisition, children and sleep, children and praise, children and giftedness, and so much more. About praise, we praise way too much and in the wrong way, which actually prevents children from trying more difficult tasks. About sleep, children are not little adults who can manage too little sleep. About language, video learning does not work. About getting along with siblings, children don't learn how to do this from their parents. About giftedness, we test way too early. And most importantly, the authors introduce us to a new way of doing preschool called Tools of the Mind. If you are a parent, a teacher, a pastor, you need to read this book. This is not difficult reading. They have taken the academic studies of countless researchers and presented such studies in terms that we can all understand.
