  • Old Man's War

On his 75th birthday John Perry does two things: he visits his wife's grave, then he enlists in the army. Fortunately for him, this being at some unspecified (but not terribly distant) point in the future, he doesn't have to impose gunpoint democracy ... (read full critics)

It’s 23 rd or 24 rd century (it is not indicated in the book, so it’s just my guess). In a universe teeming with alien races, Humans fight to keep their “living space” (I’m using purposely this term…). But Human Beings that fight this war have a technology that’s “light years” ahead of the one available on Earth and they are more than human themselves…

The book is clearly inspired by SF masterpieces such as Starship Troopers, The Forever War and Ender’s Game: it's a sort of Heinlein work “on steroids” with a lot of the most cool SF stuff such as the space elevator (here call Beantalk), nanotechnology and Bioengineering, Consciousness transfer and Neural Implants (BrainPal).

I really enjoyed this book: Scalzi has been capable to create a book that ties the reader to its pages… I’m looking forward to read the second book of the series: The Ghost Brigades

  • Amazing!
Full of tiny details that give lots of depth to the story, a story that kept me hooked from page one. Fascinating and original - and compelling as well!

  • Very much an adventure story with a long wondrous intro into almost magical technologies. very well written. Even the descriptions of the technologies were a good read. I found myself ruminating a few times on the ideas and what I would do with them.
