  • I read this book when I was in the US. I wanted to read something by Terry Pratchett and they had this at the library. It's not fantasy, it's sci-fi, but it's still very good. I never found it in Italian though...

Choice juvenile fantasy. This is not as "grown up" as, say, the Harry Potter books, but the humour is more sophisticated, mordant, and trenchant. There are some classic Pratchett moments.

The backdrop of the story is the Iraq War as it was covered on television, and the book makes some pointed social commentary about that in a round-a-bout, humorous fashion. Themes explored are also the impact a separation/divorce has on children. The main story, though, is an adventure with space aliens and fighter starship pilots, etc. The main character, Johnny Maxwell, is also on some kind of rite of passage, which entails, among other things, realizing that he is not exactly normal: he is either going mad, or he is developing "powers" of some sort.

This was an engaging read even for an adult, but I would highly recommend it to children from 9 or 10 up.

Decent quality paperback. Part of the Johnny Maxwell series:
    1. Only You Can Save Mankind.
    2. Johnny And The Dead.
    3. Johnny And The Bomb.
