  • Orcs: Weapons of Magical Destruction (Bad Blood 1), by Stan Nicholls

Home Contact us Posts Comments Ho for the orc, staple of fantasy fiction: invariably green, ugly and violent, with dubious personal hygiene and a serious image problem. Where would traditional high fantasy be without them? They seldom have names or p ... (read full critics)

I approached this book with some expectations. It looked original, at least. Quite the opposite, it is full of stereotypes, the plot is ludicrous and the characters paper-thin.

I believe the author would like to depict orcs similar to humans but there is not such a thing as a step-by-step realisation from the reader: one could swap "orc" for "human" from the very first page and nothing would change (which says a lot on how well characters are defined).

Well descripted fights (there are loads of them) get eventually repetitive and cannot save a very poor story.

I got to the end of the 700 pages just hoping it would get better. In vain. I could only feel sadness for the lost occasion.

    Very disappointing. 4/10
