Il mondo è sempre uguale sotto determinati aspetti, oggi, come alla fine del Settecento, quando Jane Austen descrisse mirabilmente in Orgoglio e pregiudizio le vicende di alcuni personaggi della borghesia campagnola del tempo: due genitori convenzionali, una nidiata di ragazze da marito, un pastore della Chiesa di Inghilterra, un seduttore senza scrupoli, un caparbio Mr. Darcy. Ma oltre a questi personaggi quasi soffocati dai loro pregiudizi e dalla loro mediocrità, più ridicoli che falliti, svetta il personaggio di Eleonora, una ragazza viva, vera, piena di temperamento e di sangue.
Jane Austen, figlia del reverendo George Austen, della parrocchia inglese di Steventon nel Hempshire dove è nata nel 1775, scrisse vari libri di squisita fattura per passatempo suo e per leggerli in famiglia. Trascorse infatti la sua breve e piatta vita nel silenzio domestico e, nubile ancora, morì nel 1817.
