I wonder how current a 2003 popular astrophysics book still is in 2008. It has been an amazing read - long time after being quite familiar with popular science - to catch up with a book that appears as good as the best I used to know back then.

I wonder how current a 2003 popular astrophysics book still is in 2008. It has been an amazing read - long time after being quite familiar with popular science - to catch up with a book that appears as good as the best I used to know back then.
The key features recommending it are:
a very good structure enabling to go through a wealth of subjects in a very orderly way; a good choice of focus topics, comments and asides that balances explanation with assessment and manages to convey much of the awe and excitement at what likely real practitioners do feel exciting and awesome; a sparing use of ethical and philosophical asides, and even then mostly focussed on advocating the intellectual superiority of science to other, less clear reasoning endeavours. Difficult to argue, and still noteworthy.
Overall, a great tool for any adult interested in catching up with the current understanding of our cosmos and how it came about over the last few centuries.
