The idea is nice.

Unfortunately the execution isn't on par. Unfortunately the execution isn't on par. The story is ok, but the overall quality has too many highs and lows, like when the author painstakingly describes all details of every single piece of military equipment (at times, frankly redundant) but then depicts an entire alien race, the Shongairi, like he couldn't be bothered. They didn't feel very "alien" to me. They think and acts much like humans with a few artificial and forced differences.
To me, Weber could have spent some extra research in a more believable aliens and spared LOTS of words in explaining, for example, the differences between a civilian semiauto PSN90 and a full auto P90. Did I know, in fact that "developed in Belgium by FN Herstal around its 5.7mm cartridges, the bullpup-configured weapon really defied traditional definitions." NO. DID I CARE? NEITHER.
All in all it's not a *bad* book. The starting point is nice, how the plot develops around the difficulties met by the invaders are also ok. The finale is also better than I expected. Some people will HATE the unforeseen plot twist at the end.
