Although she is attracted to young Mr B., she holds out against his demands and threats of abduction and rape, determined to defend her virginity and abide by her own moral standards. Psychologically acute in its investigations of sex, freedom and power, Richardson’s first novel caused a sensation when it was first published, with its depiction of a servant heroine who dares to assert herself. Richly comic and full of lively scenes and descriptions, Pamela contains a diverse cast of characters, ranging from the vulgar and malevolent Mrs Jewkes to the aggressive but awkward country squire who serves this unusual love story as both its villain and its hero.

    Io sono un lettore di lungo corso e ho affrontato poemi e racconti, mostri sacri e sconosciuti, sumeri e marziani. Questo per dire che non mi lascio scoraggiare dalla vetustà di un’opera e tanto meno dalla sua lunghezza, quindi ero partito con questo libro senza pregiudizio alcuno per l’eventuale po ...     Io sono un lettore di lungo corso e ho affrontato poemi e racconti, mostri sacri e sconosciuti, sumeri e marziani. Questo per dire che non mi lascio scoraggiare dalla vetustà di un’opera e tanto meno dalla sua lunghezza, quindi ero partito con questo libro senza pregiudizio alcuno per l’eventuale poca modernità di temi e stili. Ma già dopo le prime pagine ho iniziato ad arrancare e più andavo avanti più cresceva l’insofferenza. Innanzitutto per la ripetitività: per due terzi il romanzo ripropone ogni quattro o cinque pagine lo stesso ciclo di azioni: il nobile che concupisce Pamela, lei che lo respinge, lui che si infuria, lei che si dispera…. E se qualche personaggio minore è ben caratterizzato i due protagonisti raggiungono e spesso oltrepassano la soglia dell’insopportabilità, per non dir nulla dell’attendibilità. Il nobile B, per buona parte del romanzo carogna all’ennesima potenza capace di ordire piani diabolici, al momento di concludere si comporta come un clown semideficiente, nascondendosi in uno sgabuzzino o travestendosi da servetta per poter balzare di sorpresa sull’ignara vittima; una volta però convertito dalla virtù di Pamela si trasforma in distinto gentiluomo dotato di mente elevata e acuta. E Pamela? Raramente ho abbandonato un personaggio con tanto sollievo. Del resto ben poche eroine di carta sarebbero non dico risultate credibili, ma anche solo vagamente simpatiche col carico di virtù che Richardson concentra sulla sua persona: bellissima, virtuosissima, modestissima, devotissima, generosissima, lettrice e prosatrice, musicista e ricamatrice ed evidentemente, considerato il numero di volte che si butta in ginocchio per implorare, ringraziare, pregare e disperarsi, fornita di rotule di tungsteno.
