This novel is the real history of the Maharaja of Kapurthala and his fifth wife, a 16-year old girl called Anita Delgado, who managed to be married to him and succeed in a foreign country with everything against her during almost two decades. In the end, the fairy tale ends as usual: the marriage ends because of infidelity of both spouses, but it is very surprising that the Maharajá was able to forgive her wife's "sin" of "betrayal"; even when he was a man and he was his land's king. We are talking about the first half of the twentieth century and a culture where the woman have no place (they are worth even less than the dirt that men step on). However, the king was able to divorce his European wife and send her back to Paris with a generous pension. He didn't abandon her and it is really outstanding. I felt like the human beings have a second opportunity on this earth with this kind of souls inhabiting it.
