Geraldine Brooks always writes an interesting story. In the case of People of the Book I have to say I enjoyed this one more than either of her previous novels that I have had the opportunity to read, Year of Wonders and March. I really liked the construction of this novel. I enjoyed how each little item Hanna found within the pages of the Haggadah had it's own historical narrative wound within the tapestry of the modern-day story of the Sarajevo Haggadah's stabilization and display.

Hanna Heath, a rare-book conservator is hired to to work on the Sarajevo Haggadah, one of the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. The story unfolds as each clue Hanna finds in the book takes us on a journey back in time to discover how the book survived through history and in the end, how the book was created. I loved this story, the writing was perfect and captivating with rich historical detail, not at all as dry as the subject matter may have seemed. I found it even more exciting to know that this story is based on an actual book and some of the historical details are accurate. I would highly recommend People of the Book.

Book Description

Inspired by a true story, People of the Book is a novel of sweeping historical grandeur and intimate emotional intensity by an acclaimed and beloved author. Called “a tour de force”by the San Francisco Chronicle, this ambitious, electrifying work traces the harrowing journey of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, a beautifully illuminated Hebrew manuscript created in fifteenth-century S pain. When it falls to Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book expert, to conserve this priceless work, the series of tiny artifacts she discovers in its ancient binding—an insect wing fragment, wine stains, salt crystals, a white hair—only begin to unlock its deep mysteries and unexpectedly plunges Hanna into the intrigues of fine art forgers and ultra-nationalist fanatics.
