Perlmann's Silence is a great novel about a senior academic linguist, who finds he has nothing left to say after his wife died.
He is the chairman of a 4-week conference and he feels that he has to hold up the facade of his academic reputation. He thinks that the others expect him to come up with brilliant new ideas, but he has none. He then comes up with a plan and in order to make that plan work, he plunges himself on a path of (self)destruction.
Perlmann's Silence is not a light read at all. But once you're through the first fifty or so pages, you will want to know what happens next. The writing of Pascal Mercier is excellent!
