“She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older: the natural sequence of an unnatural beginning.” Anyone who loves the writing of Jane Austen cannot help but hope that this quotation from her last completed nove ... (read full critics)

    A great intro to Austen

I initially picked it up for my Brit Lit from 1798 class, and though hesitant (I have avoided reading Austen in the past for fear that I would be bored to death), I found myself really enjoying Austen's often-comical use of free indirect discourse in her narration and her commentary on the behaviors of women and men, both interpersonally and educationally (examine the reading habits and discussions of the characters for more on that). A pleasant surprise of a novel.

After watching Mansfield Park on DVD last night, I had the whim to read this novel. I have the movie on DVD (actually two versions) but oddly enough, had yet to read the book. After watching Mansfield Park on DVD last night, I had the whim to read this novel. I have the movie on DVD (actually two versions) but oddly enough, had yet to read the book. I thought that it was quite lovely. Its not my favorite Austen novel (Mansfield Park is my favorite), but it is close. I think the story could take place today and it would have the same meaning. That is what is great about many of Austen’s novels. They have meaning for us in our lives today.

  • I love Jane Austen. That is all.
I just love the way she writes and I don't know why I hadn't read this book before.
It's not Pride & Prejudice, but it's a great book anyway and one you must read!

  • A bit repetitive. Not so brilliant.

This is the one book of Jane Austen which I least liked so far. It is very similar in structure, and plot, to many of her previous works but it lacks the complexity and spell-bounding pathos which usually hold the reader tight to the story. Everything is pretty much straightforward and, if not for occasional well placed plot twists, it's a rather plain story.

Characters have a want of substance and definition, they actually seem to be the shadow of their predecessors: Captain Wentworth -- former Mr. Darcy, Anne -- Elinor Dashwood, Mr. Charles Musgroves -- Mr. Bennet.
That is they are all loosely remakes of former Austen's characters though without being quite as right-on.

The Austen's distinctive character-driven humour is somewhat lacking too. Mary Elliot and her husband often remember of the much funnier Bennets couple, but they rarely entertain as decidedly.

The ending seems to be particularly rushed, I wonder if Austen's health troubles at the time had played a role in this.

All in all is not bad, but definitely not her best.

It was soon generally agreed that Tuesday should be the day; Charles only reserving the advantage of still teasing his wife, by persisting that he would go to the play to-morrow if nobody else would. ~ PERSUASION
