This picture has a dollop of peanut butter on one edge, a smear of grape jelly on the other, and an X across the whole thing. I cut it out of a magazine for homework when I was six years old. "Look for words that begin with W," my teacher, Mrs. Evans

SPOILER ALERT
Hollis Woods was a tough orphan girl. She escaped from school, and travelled around the country looking for a foster home which she could stay forever, and that meant — a family.

Hollis never stayed in a foster home for a long time. There were not many of them that she liked and gave her the feeling of a family, except at Steven’s house and Josie’s.

Steven Regan’s family included his father and mother, and Steven the boy himself. A family of three would be perfect, but they still wanted a girl. Therefore, Hollis was there for them. They all loved each other.

One day, unfortunately, Steven had a car accident and Hollis blamed this as her fault. Overwhelmed by guilty feelings, she once again ran away, and this was the time she met Josie.

Josie was an aged artist with dementia. Hollis had to take care of her when she forgot things. The social worker of Hollis found this not acceptable. She thought Hollis ought to find a proper foster home, but Hollis hated the idea of leaving Josie. In order to avoid being found by the social workers, Hollis hid herself and Josie in the Regan’s summer house in the mountains. All their daily necessities were carefully tended to by a secret caregiver who turned out to be Steven.

At last, Josie, who forgot about almost everything, was sent to her cousin’s caring. Hollis and the Regans forgave each other about the accident. They were very happy to see one another again. Hollis’ wish came true: she found her new last name Regan and a real family.

The plot of this story is quite simple. It talks a lot about the loving and caring among the characters, about the importance of friendship and family. There are no bad people in the book. Not a scene would scare you. I felt happy and warm while reading the whole story.

The author divides the book into “pictures” which were flashbacks of Hollis’ life with the Regans, and “chapters” which was the present time when Hollis was with Josie. After a “picture”, there is a “chapter”. This is how the story was told. The switching between the two plots was rather confusing at first, but I found it challenging and interesting to read on. I like this heartwarming story very much. If I have time, I would re-read it. ...Continua

Overall this book was ok. I think a prequel would be nice to give a little background on why Hollis ended up where she did. The ending did not leave any loose ends which was good.
