  • PIRATE LATITUDES by Michael Crichton

Review by Lynn Harnett (JAN 9, 2010) Pure fun, Crichton’s posthumous pirate novel swashbuckles from dastardly deed to deadly danger and, just when all is lost, cobbles together ingenuity and luck to sail another day of derring-do. It’s 1665 on the re ... (read full critics)

  • Pirate Latitudes By Michael Crichton

In Michael Crichton’s posthumously published Pirate Latitudes, the grog is strong, the wenches are saucy, the blood is spilled by the bucket and the cutthroats do their slicing with fiendish regularity. The hero of this fast-paced novel is Charles Hu ... (read full critics)

  • At the end of the day, a nice reading

I enjoyed it only from the second half on. Before the story proceeds so slowly that more than once I was tempted to give up and put this book back on the shelf.

It is as if the first part is merely a draft. Events, characters' actions and details are just put in the page without going deeper into them, without explaining, without clarifying why they have been put on there.
I couldn't help but notice this book can be divided into three sections: the first, which is absolute rubbish. The second, which is kinda of preparation to the final action and the final action, which is gripping very much indeed. Sure enough, the final escape is a bit improbable, but still...

I've read many books of Michael Crichton. Some of them I loved and some I just liked. As for Pirates I'm afraid I'll keep feeling it is a book that was never actually completed nor refined.

  • Not up to Crichton's usual standard, Pirate Latitudes is still a fast paced and fun novel - nothing special, but solid all the same.

  • Disappointed!

As a long-time fan of Michael Crichton, I feel extremely sorry to have to say that I simply couldn't finish this book. It's sad that this is his last book before death, but it's sadder that it could not live up to any of his other works.

As a long-time fan of Michael Crichton, I feel extremely sorry to have to say that I simply couldn't finish this book. It's sad that this is his last book before death, but it's sadder that it could not live up to any of his other works.

This book is about pirates and I have no particular interest in this area, but that is not the only reason I can't read on. This book simply does not have much of a grip on the reader. The story is very flat and predictable. I find myself having to force myself to read on simply because I want to get it over with.

I'm disappointed, to say the least.

  • A pirate's story, and nothing is missing. Even a kraken attack appears at some point of the narration... it's a good reading, perfect on vacation

Storia di pirati, non manca niente, cè addirittura anche un attacco del kraken... si lascia leggere e distrae benissimo.

  • Nice to read

Nice to read. But definitely distant from the best Michael Crichton, where scientific and technological issues were considered at the border between reality and (s)-fiction. This is just a nice pirates story.

Set in a British colony in Jamaica in 1665, Pirate Latitudes has all the hallmarks of Michael Crichton's novels: fast moving, gripping, full of non-stop action, danger, thrills and blood. Although touted as the last work of Crichton before his death in 2008, it looks like one of his earlier works written at the time of The Andromeda Strain or Eaters of the Dead. Still entertaining and enjoyable though.
