    Compelling and intriguing narrative of Stewart's trek across Afghanistan. Powerful descriptions of the landscape, the people he meets, and the impact on person and intellect walking alone for 100s of miles - with dog - in a foreign land.

  • Rory Stewart is a true eccentric. But his book about his walk from Herat to Kabul just after the Americans threw over the Taliban regime is a great read. It is not "Mad dogs and Englishmen" but one mad Englishman and a dog he picked up somewhere along the road.

    Rory Stewart is a true eccentric. But his book about his walk from Herat to Kabul just after the Americans threw over the Taliban regime is a great read. It is not "Mad dogs and Englishmen" but one mad Englishman and a dog he picked up somewhere along the road.
    I loved his description of the Afghan history, his encounters with the people (not always a success) and the landscape.
    A very rewarding book.
