Book Description
English literature's most beloved comedy of manners
Few have failed to be charmed by the witty and independent spirit of Elizabeth Bennet. Her early determination to dislike Mr. Darcy is a prejudice only matched by the folly of his arrogant pride. Their first impressions give way to true feelings in a comedy profoundly concerned with happiness and how it might be achieved.
'Pride and Prejudice has always been the most popular of Jane Austen's books … with its good humoured comedy, its sunny heroine, its dream denouement' (Claire Tomalin)
'These modern editions are to be strongly recommended for their scrupulous texts, informative notes and helpful introductions' (Brian Southam, the Jane Austen Society) [

I avoided reading this novel since high school, as I thought it sounded tremendously boring. In the same way that people who have never really had to do much public speaking work up an irrational fear of it because of others' fear of it, I feared this novel would be a complete snorefest and kept my distance. As an English major in undergrad, it finally caught up with me in a 19th century British fiction class. To my great and pleasant surprise, I found myself caught up in the timeless, though predictable, "courtship" between Darcy and Elizabeth, but most of all, Austen's clever prose and the hilarious Mr. Bennet. Set your fears aside and take the plunge--it's worth the time.
What is there to say about Pride and Prejudice? No one should be without this book on their shelf at home.
What can I say? I love Liz - strong, knowledgable, and bold.
Or maybe I'm looking for Mr. Darcy too!
Bought for me and reading with Gen.
My favorite book to date. Creative, thoughtful, insightful, romantic, original, exciting.
This is probably Jane Austen's most famous novel, with good reason. The characters are so interesting all with different voices and ideas. It's amazing how family is depicted in this novel, the Bennet's are real people and you can feel the love below all the chatter. Excellent love story, believable ... Continue
This is probably Jane Austen's most famous novel, with good reason. The characters are so interesting all with different voices and ideas. It's amazing how family is depicted in this novel, the Bennet's are real people and you can feel the love below all the chatter. Excellent love story, believable most importantly. What about Mr. Darcy? I can see him in my minds eye whenever I re-read it. Of course I'm Lizzie!
