I somewhat regret having read this but I was stuck in front of a computer for a few days without anything else to read. At least I am reminded again of how good proper books really are in comparison.
This is kiddy fare, judging by the lack of sex or nudity in an otherwise ostensibly grown-up world of science-fictiony horror, and buckets of gore and ultra-violence. I like my horror B-Movies with a bit of sex thank you very much - a time-honoured tradition in the movies that is sadly absent here. This is the equivalent of a very bad yet ambitious low-budget sci-fi B-movie, I suppose.
Perhaps if you have a dull-witted nephew (this book has absolutely nothing for female readers) that is not keen on reading books, this one will at least get him reading. But then, perhaps not.
I have read worse (Scott Sigler's Ancestor, for example). This book is not entirely without merit, but it comes damn close. You should probably give it a miss unless you really do want to switch entirely off for a couple of days.
It is interesting to note how highly rated these types of books are on Amazon, and I suspect that the ratings emanate from a loyal bunch of "fans" of the author who are not the best judges of what constitutes good writing. In the end, you have to judge for yourself. After all, enjoyment does come down to personal taste even though the accolade of decent writing or literature does not....Continua
