In 1517, Martin Luther nails his ninety-five theses to the door of Wittenburg Cathedral, and a dance of death begins between a radical Anabaptist with many names and a loyal papal spy known mysteriously as "Q." In this brilliantly conceived literary thriller set in the chaos of the Reformation-an age devastated by wars of religion-a young theology student adopts the cause of heretics and the disinherited and finds himself pursued by a relentless papal informer and heretic hunter. What begins as a personal struggle to reveal each other's identity becomes a mission that can only end in death.

A story of two adversaries thru their lifetime. Set during the Reformation we follow two men and their fates and adventures as they pit their wits, beliefs and friends against one another. Not a period of history I am very familiar with, this story hooked me quickly. Supposedly written by 4 separate Italian authors the book is tough to set aside. Not least because the 1st half jumps around in time and location and viewpoint frequently. Hence walk away and be faced with the distinct possibility that when you pick it up again you have to backtrack to regain perspective. The 2nd half of the book is a more straightforward sequential recollection of events, but the pace and introduction of new characters, scenes, plots keeps you attached to the protagonists as they hurtle towards the inevitable meeting and climax of the story. Dense prose in places and scenes of carnage and insanity pervade the story, making it one that requires the readers concentration all the way thru. But totally worth it.
