Finally I managed to get my hands on Rainbow Valley and its reading confirms me in what I had always thought, i.e. that critics who are saying that this must be considered another volume within the Anne of Green Gables series are completely wrong. On the contrary, as it is clearly shown by the title itself (not an "Anne of" - type), it is a collective characters book, more similar to The golden road than to any other Montgomery's novel. As to the story, of course it is good enough and somehow witty, however, it lacks in depth and authentic round shape characters. Moreover, it confirms me also of something I keep stating on the subject of youth literature: that is, often, especially in minor works, no-school-story sadly means no actual plot.

  • This novel focuses on the Blythe children's companions, the Merediths, the children of the local minister. It's anecdotal and affecting, as are all of LMM's books. However, I was never fond of the character of Mary Vance, so this was actually my least favorite of the Anne books.
