Book Description
Years ago, the enormous, enigmatic alien spacecraft called Rama sailed through our solar system as mind-boggling proof that life existed -- or had existed -- elsewhere in the universe. Now, at the dawn of the twenty-third century, another ship is discovered hurtling toward us. A crew of Earth's best and brightest minds is assembled to rendezvous with the massive vessel. They are armed with everything we know about Raman technology and culture. But nothing can prepare them for what they are about to encounter on board Rama II: cosmic secrets that are startling, sensational -- and perhaps even deadly.

I didn't know what to expect with the sequel to Rendezvous With Rama. With the first entry being phenomenal, I assumed it would be fantastic. It seems to me that there wasn't much plot planning past having Rama return to our solar system. Overall, it was a bloated narrative about the cosmonauts that go on the second Rama excursion. I'm sorry but when I buy a book called "Rama II" I'd like to read more about Rama than the humans going into Rama. The beauty of the first novel was its quick and enjoyable narrative style describing the Raman world and the exploration of it. It wasn't bogged down by too much back story about the characters. "Rama II" takes the exact opposite approach. Most of it is drama about the cosmonauts. The biggest and most egregious outcome of this work is the gutting of the wonder of Rama. The situations inside Rama in this entry are mostly over-the-top and feel like fiction. Clarke's style in Rendezvous made the pages come alive. You could almost see the scenes play out in your subconscious. This amazing writing style is lost completely in "Rama II". I have a feeling that Gentry Lee had something to do with this. Mr. Clarke should have stuck to his guns and not collaborated with Gentry Lee in this case. I'm not sure I'll be reading "Garden of Rama" anytime soon.
