Such an incredible book! Beautiful, smart, interesting and never ever boring, even if you're not so much into archaeology.

This is a "quiet" book. There are no earth shattering events, teeth clenching dramas or heart rending romances. It is a tale of friendship between two disparate females with one commom interest, hunting nature's "treasures" along beaches in England in the early 19th century. This seems simple enough, but it is the foundation of a true story with ethical implications that have been pondered forever. Who should be credited with "discovery", the one who stumbles upon it, or the one who takes that "discovery" and unearths the true meaning of it? How does a new concept be introduced into a society steeped in traditional thinking without the threat to normalcy? Yes, a simple story, but certainly one that opens conversation.

  • Remarkable Creaaturs

Although I RUSH to Tracy Chevalier I was not that interested in THIS topic but she 'got' me...and I once again was pulled into the characters of the story even MORE than the story itself.

I LOVE Tracy Chevalier's novels, and while I wouldn't rate this one as highly as The Lady and the Unicorn or The Virgin Blue, it's certainly a very enjoyable read. Remarkable Creatures is the story of the changing friendship between two women from very different backgrounds who nonetheless find themselves together on the beaches of Lyme Regis. The gentle focus on the women of the era, though the plot doesn't have a major romantic sideline, reminded me of Austen's classics, and I found the underlying learnings about fossils and how these challenged thoughts about the church were fascinating.

  • As always, I find the author's stories are often too dry for me, it feels like reading histories, but I still try to read every book she publishes.

  • Such a fabulous story - based on the life of E. Philpot & Mary Anning and their wonderful fossil discoveries. Perfect mix of facts and fiction!
Interesting to read about the commotion and the feelings of turmoil that discoveries of fossils caused in early 19th century.
