There is something of Rose in Bloom, in this novel; and - though it is far better than Rainbow Valley - somehow it confirms that Montgomery is much less clever than Alcott in writing sequels. Probably it is the fact that everything is already set and announced, and no surprise comes to reader out of the developing of the plot, since both Jem's and Walter's destinies have been clearly enough foreshadowed in Anne of Ingleside. However, if on the one hand one can enjoy Montgomery's usual sharp way of writing, on the other hand, all Rilla's adventures finally reaveal themselves as pale shadows of her mother's ones, which the reader has already been acquainted with in much more colourful details in the first two books of the Anne's series. A good entertaining book, but nothing more.
