I felt when sad when I read this book. How the events turned out was devastating. I didn't expect some events to happen. At first, I thought that I would be rating it with two stars because I felt that the story was not that gaining my interest as I read it. I felt that my expectations were not being answered by the plot of the book. It reached to the point that I felt that the story was not progressing. But then, like I said, I didn't quite expect that a particular event--the part towards the end of the book--to happen that it actually resulted to be somewhat the more climactic or a shocking part for me. It was very dramatic that I felt crying. I think it vindicated the story that I have to give it three stars for that part. Though I was left hanging with the ending because I was expecting a "domino effect" on the events. I mean, I was expecting for things to be worse and for more tragic events as a result. Yes, I may appear very vague to you now but once you read the book, you might get it or understand what I am trying to say. You may even share the same sentiment. Who knows. I don't want to elaborate things and blab about what really happen because it might spoil future readers. Anyway, I also didn't feel like the book focused on Penelope's character that much like it supposed to, like The Luxe on Elizabeth. I didn't really get to feel Penelope. Just saying.

I knew what I was getting into with Rumors after having read Luxe but this book proved too vapid even for me. (This is saying something considering I was looking to read something light; this was the Diet Coke of light reading) Again, for the Gossip Girl lover, you might find some entertainment value here but all you're really doing is picturing Chase Crawford in a top hat and Leighton Meester asphyxiating herself with a corset.

The only thing that separates this teen lit historical novel from the "regular" novels in the historical fiction genre is that all the main characters happen to be teenagers living at the end of the 19th century. Well-written and enticing, Godbersen throws in the occasional twist and gives the reader ample information about why the Hollands, Hayeses and Schoonmakers are all involved in scandalous activities for their day. Give it a try, but only after reading The Luxe, which is the first book in the series.
