...And then it became Dresden File from hell. Clever one liners, hard-boiled style. But little substance, and above all, the feeling that anything illogical might happen to change the course of the plot. And guess what, it does. The long finale is long, obviously written to set up sequels, for which I won't be coming back, sorry!...Continua
but I want to add more cowbells and stuff... first of all I'll make the main character more badass than Dresden, I mean at least like Dresden after book 7-8... and I will give him interesting friends who know more about magic than him, sorta like Dresden around book 2... and I could give him a human head as companion... totally different from the skull that Dresden has... way more original and not derivative at all!!!
The idea of making the main character more morally nuanced (or at least an anti-hero of sort) by having him fight in Hell's Arena and commit various demonic assassinations had some merit... unfortunately by the end of the (first, but I doubt I'll go on with the series) book we notice that the character talks a lot of how evil he is, but he never kills another human being outside of a fight, never causes unnecessary harm (except to inhuman adversaries) and spends a lot of time musing about how he is close to get into a murderous rampage... which never actually happens.
The rest (implausible fake-hard boiled mystery, plot holes, parade of supernatural entities always more incredibly powerful and yet always unable to score some meaningful hit on the main character) are pure Dresden. So we can at least say that the author managed to out-Dresden Dresden in the bad parts. With atrocious dialogue, to boot....Continua
Around half of the book I wasn't sure if I was liking it or not. The story is nice, dialogues are funny, a bit overdone at times and hysterically funny at other times.
The plot twist at the is just a bit disappointing, but on the other hand it makes everything click in place.
It's definitely a nice book. Nothing that will change your view on modern literature or anything, but a fun ride nonetheless....Continua
