1891. Seventeen-year-old Leonie Vernier and her brother abandon Paris for the sanctuary of their aunt's isolated country house near Carcassonne, the Domaine de la Cade. But in the nearby woods, Leonie stumbles across a ruined sepulchre - and a timeless mystery whose traces are written in blood. 2007. Meredith Martin arrives at the Domaine de la Cade as part of her research for a biography she's writing. But Meredith is also seeking the key to her own complex legacy and soon becomes immersed in the story of a tragic love, a missing girl, a unique deck of tarot cards, an unquiet soul and the strange events of one cataclysmic night more than a century ago...

  • This book was almost great..However,I think Labyrith was her masterpiece. Her style is exquisite and I love the fact that the narration doesn't follow the time sequence.

  • I've lost track when I started the book, it must be some time in February or late January. It took me a long time to really get into the story, it isn't as good as "Labyrinth", I still enjoy the read since I know nothing about Tarot cards.

    I wish there's 3.5 stars.

The style of writing was a bit odd; I know one of the characters was contemporary American, but really, some of the descriptions were bordering on Romance novel style and language overly Americanised in her sections.

Do I need to know how lithe and slender the girl is when it has no bearing whatsoever on the story? or what label her cardigan, make of phone etc? Unless of course it was one of those sponsored mentions (which worked btw - I can remember it was an Abercrombie & Fitch cardi - Oh dear...)

  • Well written but a rather disappointing story. Not at the same level of her previous book, Labyrinth.
