I begyndelsen af 80´erne ankom Gregory David Roberts, bankrøver og herionmisbruger, til Indien efter at være flygtet fra et australsk fængsel, hvor han levede i et af Bombays slumkvarterer. Her etablerede han en gratis sundhedsklinik og blev optaget af den lokale mafia, hvor han arbejdede med hvidvaskning af penge, med dokumentfalsknerier og som gangster. Samtidig fandt han tid til at lære hindi og marathi, blive forelsket og tilbringe en umenneskelig tid i et indisk fængsel. Herefter, hvis det i sig selv ikke var nok optrådte han også i Bollywood film og kæmpede med mujahedinerne i Afghanistan.
Bogen filmatiseres i 2008 med Johnny Depp i hovedrollen.
