Book Description
In this extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey, Wally Lamb invites us to hitch a wild ride on a journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine to come along in years.
Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

Can't believe this was written by a man! one of the best books i have read, you feel as though Dolores is real person, she isn't perfect, she makes mistakes and we love her for it!
Read this a long time ago but I had to share it. I loved this book so much. It's a great story of dealing with not so pretty parts of lives and uses some great humor and realizations that we all have at some point in our lives.
This was the first adultadult book I read that concerns everything from rape to obesity to lesbianism. This was the first adultadult book I read that concerns everything from rape to obesity to lesbianism. Your heart will break for the main character and every time you think she's found a piece of happiness she deserves, your heart will break all over again. Some would say she brought a good portion of it on herself, others would say after what she experienced she just needed some kindness and understanding. I'm not sure what I think even after all these years, but this is a sad book.
I know other people have stated this, but I really can not believe that the writer of this book is a man. It really spoke to me on a deeper level and as I was reading it I thought I could almost feel the heart and soul of this woman.
Wally Lamb is a gifted writer.
Inscribed by the author, "For Rebecca--In celebration of the goals and realities of Literacy Volunteers. All best, Wally Lamb 4/22/93"
At times I really disliked Dolores. I think the book was very well written, however, I didn't necessarily enjoy it. I think Lamb did a wonderful job of making the reader feel what Dolores was going through. I am glad I finished it, but probably won't recommend it to others.
