  • Carrie Fisher Likes to Shock Herself and Her Readers in 'Shockaholic'

“What you’ll have of me after I journey to that great Death Star in the sky is an extremely accomplished daughter, a few books, and a picture of a stern-looking girl wearing some kind of metal bikini lounging on a giant drooling squid, behind a newsc ... (read full critics)

  • Shockaholic by Carrie Fisher: review

Carrie Fisher makes a telling reference to "radioactive celebrity" in her new book, Shockaholic, in a chapter about her former friend Michael Jackson. Just as Princess Leia was once trapped by Jabba the Hut, it seems that Jackson ensnared Fisher with ... (read full critics)

I pre-ordered this book as soon as I heard it was going to be released. I totally adore Carrie Fisher and am a huge fan of her writing. Of course I think perhaps my expectations were a little high as I found I didn't actually laugh out loud reading this, and was a little disappointed to start with. I think this is partly because she re-used parts of her blog and I'd already read those parts before. As someone who is totally uninterested in "celebrity" culture a lot of the parts of this book were lost on me, I really didn't want to hear about Michael Jackson. It's quite odd as Carrie Fisher is obsessed with her parents being huge celebrities, as it obviously had a huge impact on her growing up, but from my generation's perspective I'd never heard of Eddie Fisher and had a slight recollection of Debbie from singing in the rain. I like Carrie's novels because even though they're set in Hollywood there's something to relate to, drugs, relationships, motherhood, mental health issues, but when everything is about "celebrity" it's much harder to find the common ground. For me the best chapter in this book was the last one when she was talking about reconcillng with her father and his death. That was very funny and tragic and moving. At the same time I feel badly criticising anything in this book, because it is her life and she's an amazing person, to do all the things she does and still remain such a sense of humour and wit about it all. While at first I was a little disappointed by the end I was loving it and am very glad to have bought it.
