Englishman becomes Samurai in 17th Century Japan
From my Amazon review I first read this book 15 years ago and remember being taken by it and recently decided to buy a copy and reread it.English Pilot- Major Blackthorne and the remains of his crew remain ship-wrecked on the shores of Japan. He and
He and his crew are captured and risk execution. However various lords realise that Blackthorne has knowledge of another world that can help in their rise to power. However the same knowledge is deadly for the Spanish and Portughese , who would prefer to have him dead.
Blackthorne finally comes under the protection of the warlord Toranaga and little by little learns more of the Japanese, their rites, their way of life and Bushido. He is also granted the title of Samurai.
At over 1000 pages, the book is a well written epic. Interesting the culture clash between the Elizabethan English man and the Japanese.
Recommended if you love a Samurai read and have an interest in Japanese culture.
