This startling, sensual, hypnotically compelling novel tells a story of adventure, sexual enthrallment, and a love so powerful that it unhinges a man's life. In 1861 French silkworm merchant Hervé Joncour is compelled to travel to Japan, where, in the court of an enigmatic nobleman, he meets a woman. They do not touch; they do not even speak. And he cannot read the note she sends him until he has returned to his country. But in the moment he does, Joncour is possessed. The same spell will envelop anyone who reads Silk, a work that has the compression of a fable, the evocative detail of the greatest historical fiction, and the devastating erotic force of a dream.

An absolutely beautifully written little book. A meaningful and moving story in around 65 pages. Anyone can read this and then discover why a well written novel can be small and powerful.

This one didn't do much for me. Beautiful imagery. Incomprehensible characters. Meh.

I liked this style: clean, short, concrete. This author goes directly to the facts. He doesn't loose time in unnecesary descriptions. He goes to the point. This is a wonderful writing about a platonic love story: A guy that goes to Japan, buys some eggs, and falls inlove with a girl whose voice he never ever listens to. This is a story about a life, and a question about the sense of living, the sense of love, the sense of marriage. Is there any sense? That is the question you make to yourself when you read this. I liked it, it entertained me, and it relaxed me a lot.
