Small World is in the author’s words ‘a kind of sequel’ to Changing Places, published nine years ago. The place-changers, Zapp and Swallow, are again central characters; the dreadful Ringbaum, whose competitiveness enabled him to win a famous game of ... (read full critics)

A really good and entertaining coral novel, that carries you around the globe following the stories of the main and of the side characters. Easy to read and with interesting digressions on the history and theories of literary criticism.

"On the shelf under the counter she kept a Bills and Moon romance to read in those slack periods where there were no passengers to deal with. The one she was reading at the moment was called Love Scene. It was about a girl called Sandra who went to work as a nanny for a film director whose wife had died tragically in a car accident, leaving him with two children to look after. Of course Sandra fell in love with the film director, though unfortunately he was in love with the actress taking the leading role in the film he was making - or was he just pretending to be in love with her to keep her sweet?"
