You couldn't really tell about Mama's brain just from looking at her, but it was obvious as soon as she spoke. She had a high voice, like a little girl's, and she only knew twenty-three words. I know this for a fact, because we kept a list of the things Mama said tacked to the inside of the kitchen cabinet. Most of the words were common ones, like good and more and hot, but there was one word only my mother said, soof.

Although she lives an unconventional lifestyle with her mentally disabled mother and their doting neighbor, Bernadette, Heidi has a lucky streak that has a way of pointing her in the right direction. When a mysterious word in her mother's vocabulary begins to haunt her, Heidi's thirst for the truth leads her on a cross-country journey in search of the secrets of her past.

A dramatic tour de force by the best-selling author of Regular Guy.

Twelve-year-old Heidi lived with her mother in a shabby apartment in Reno. Heidi’s mother was mentally disabled and only knew twenty-three words. When asked who she was, her answer was always “So B. It”. Thus the mother and daughter became “So B. It” and “Heidi It”. They were taken care of by a kind-hearted neighbour named Bernadette who was suffering from agoraphobia since her father’s death. When So B. It uttered a strange word “soof”, it aroused Heidi’s curiosity about her mother’s past. From her apartment, she found an old camera and discovered a photograph of her mother taken at a place called Hilltop before Heidi was born. Using the hints on the photo, she decided to start a cross-country journey on her own to find out the meaning of the mysterious word “soof”

With the help of a lot of nice people during the journey, Heidi finally got to the Hilltop, home for the mentally disabled, met her grandfather and discovered who her parents were. “Soof” was the name Heidi’s disabled father called her mother, whose real name was Sophie.

I like this book very much. Heidi is a lovable character. She is brave and strong, and holds a positive attitude to overcome even the biggest problems in life.

Heidi was always surrounded with loving and caring people. Bernadette was a blessing to them. Even the strangers whom Heidi met on her journey were all nice people. The world is full of loving and caring people. All we need to do is just to open our eyes and our hearts to see them. This book is really so touching.
