A beautiful, poignant account of Oscar Wilde's life written by one of his 2 sons, Vyvyan Holland, who was forced to change his name from Vyvyan Wilde to Vyvyan Holland (Holland was Wilde's wife, Constance, maiden name), after Wilde's trial.
The scandal was SO big that Constance and her 2 sons were forced to flee the UK after Wilde's trial and subsequent imprisonment. The children never saw their father again, their names were changed to protect them from any ripercussion the name Wilde could have brought them, nobody in their family ever mentioned their father's name again. If you think about it, what happened to Oscar Wilde was absolutely terrible and unfair, he was treated injustly, people turned their backs to his talent and genius from one day to another because of the allegations about his homosexuality. Wilde suffered incredibly, his life was literally ruined and he ended his life poor, sick and disillusioned. Also his family suffered greatly from the scandal and this book tells the story from this point of view. Vyvyan never got to really know his father, only years later did he get to know the true story and eventually find again the father that he never got to know.
I absolutely adore and revere Oscar Wilde, whenever I read his biographies I feel terribly sorry for what this man had to endure in his lifetime. He was a man of great sensitivity and kindness, a truly beautiful mind, one of the greatest masters of English Literature.
