This is a magnificent historical novel detailing the Progress to the North undertaken by Henry VIII in 1541. The lawyer Matthew Shardlake and his sidekick Jack Barak arrive in York to present petitions to Henry when he arrives. But they have also been commissioned by Archbishop Cranmer to undertake a mission that involves the security of the realm.
From the very first page the story races forward at a gripping pace. I found it so exciting it was difficult to put down. In addition the historical content is stimulating and engrossing. Six hundred odd pages of pure delight!

This is another great read by CJ Sansom. As Matthew Shardlake travels to Yorkshire there are some interesting encounters ahead! The author brings to life the wide cultural differences, the religious and political problems and difficulties of distance in Tudor England. I particularly enjoyed the details of the huge Court following the King's Progress around the country. Great depiction of Tudor York. The only criticism I have about the book is its length. Nothing would have been spoilt with 200 words less.
