Hiaasen's books are not wall-to-wall humour - he has some lovely character-development and standard thriller in his books, too. This guy can write really well - he makes Dean R. Koontz's cardboard cut-out characters look like... well, cardboard cut-outs.
The first two pages of this off-kilter novel prove his mastery over serious, character-led plotting. If you can read these and then stop then don't bother with the rest of the book.
Hiaasen almost always has strong female main characters, with a sprinkling of eccentrics and just plain insane types to provide the humour and thrilling tension. I have read several of his and can attest to the fact that if you enjoy one then you will most probably enjoy the others.
The plotting is reasonably dense but entirely gripping and fast-paced - pretty much like all his other works. This would make a profoundly funny and serious movie, a combination something like The World According To Garp, but slightly more humorous and light-hearted.
