  A gripping story in which Inspector Rebus is a narrator more than a protagonist, as most of the facts unfurl before his eyes with little contribution from the main character. Of course his wit and street-smarts are necessary for the development, but more than a Rebus story I'd call it a great thriller - featuring John Rebus. Really compelling, and the characters are solid and realistic even when the main character's (and subsequently the readers') point of view about them changes even drastically.
