  This new volume deals with the analysis and pedagogical treatment of literary texts. From a viewpoint of stylistics as the connecting middle ground between linguistics and literary studies, the book explores the nature of literature as a subject in the English curriculum. A close examination of the rhetorical and linguistic structure of literary texts is possible through the important distinction drawn between text and discourse. In concentrating on their value as pieces of communication, the author suggests close links to our approach to the teaching of written language in general.
