"Most of life is so dull it is not worth discussing, and it is dull at all ages. When we change our brand of cigarette, move to a new neighborhood, subscribe to a different newspaper, fall in and out of love, we are protesting in ways both frivolous and deep against the not to be diluted dullness of day-to-day living. Unfortunately, one mirror is as treacherous as another, reflecting at some point in every adventure the same vain unsatisfied face, and so when she asks what have I done? she means really what am I doing? as one usually does."
This is a draft of a novel that remained unpublished during Capote life. It was discovered in 2004 and published for the first time by his trustee.
There are reasons why Capote left it behind: this novel is clearly a draft, the story is quite well-rounded, yet not perfectly balanced, and sometimes characters motivations are not fully analyzed, why do they do this or that?
The style is, in my opinion, remarkable, especially considering at what age it was written. Some passages, like the one I quoted, are brilliant.
I started it in several occasions, but this time I went through and finished it in a couple of days (it isn't a big book, anyway!).
I didn't like Grady, the protagonist, at the beginning and I think it was her that was putting me off: so self-confident, a classic spoiled upper-class adolescent, but without the wit and awkwardness of Holden. Your usual New York socialite. But later on, she reveals bit by bit her true personality.
It's probably more significant for people who already love Truman Capote, but I liked it even though I only read one of his novel. Anyway, I must admit that I loved "Other Voices, Other Rooms", so I probably should read more Capote!
