This is the third book by Grisham I read, and a rather disappointing one after reading "the appeal" (which is good) and "the runnaway jury" (which is wonderful).

As my friend EL has rightly pointed out, too many distractions, too many unnecessary characters which do not assist the flow of story in any way. The story can be cut down by a half if the unnecessary details are omitted.

The biggest problem is that there is no "last juror". After half are still alive when the story ends, which is an anticlimax for me looking for the last juror vs the juror killer (but maybe that's just me).

Flip flopped between giving it two stars and three stars but finally think reading this book is a regretful experience. I believe there are better Grishams out there.

Really bad story without a main theme. Main character was a owner of a newspaper in a small town. A murder case happened and a wealthy criminal was properly convicted. The criminal threatened to kill the jurors if they gave a guilty verdict. They did, and 8 years later when the bad guy was released, the jurors started being killed one by one.

Frankly, the storyline is bad. The author kept side-tracking from the main story. There are too many irrelevant plots and characters. Sometimes you wonder "where is this character come from?" or "who is this guy?" The ending is particularly bad and unconvincing.

Don't read it. There are better choices out there.

  • Grisham is Great

I love his writing style and subjects. He pulls you in with charectors you can relate to and takes you on a legal ride that never dissappoints! This book did have me missing my grandmothers southern cooking!

My husband and I have now both finished reading this 2004 offering from John Grisham. We are avid fans of his books and have now read and enjoyed virtually all of them. Some of the characters are from his first(I think) novel 'A Time to Kill' as like the latter it is set in Mississippi.
The story centres on the town on Clanton, Mississippi in the 1970s as seen through the eyes of newspaper owner Willie Traynor. The main plot line centres around a murder trial where the accused says he will have his revenge on the Jury if he is found guilty.
There are many other stories that weave in and around the main plot to give a fascinating picture of life in 1970s Mississippi. The book covers various topics such as racial divide, religion, justice, corruption and war. Highly recommended.

I used to read quite a lot of Gerisham’s in the past years then I lost interest somehow. The Last Juror is a great return to form by John Grisham after his last two books which I felt to be under par for his high standards. Whilst returning to familiar ground of the Deep South, racial tensions, courtrooms and lawyers, he also manages to get a new original element into this book by narrating the book from the viewpoint of a journalist and also by mixing his familiar legal story telling with the family sagas of books like "A Painted House". Thoroughly enjoyable and well written.

  • Another good Grisham book. This one is about another high-profile case in the small southern town of Canton, but it takes the perspective of the town's young newspaper editor. Well worth reading.
