  • It is actually worth five-star rating, but I give it a four for the unbearable sadness and regret.

Pai Hsien-yung's 'Taipei People' packs a collection of 14 short stories brilliantly describing the lives of the Chinese people living on Taiwan during the period of martial law. Through the markedly distinctive story lines in the collection, dismay is one commonly emoted by their protagonists, while the sweetness in their lives remain locked on the 'mainland'. For them, Taiwan appears to be an island besieged by fog, where they pass their days myopically toward the future. Migrants, refugees, or colonisers? Due to the complexity involved, 'Taipei people' is almost seem as a misnomer if not for its geographical correctness. Curiously (rather, lamentably), in today's Taiwan, one wonders whether these former migrants (and their offsprings) who remain on the island would regard 'Taiwan people' a misnomer?
