  La prima cosa che ho pensato di Newland Archer, tutto compiaciuto per essersi trovato la moglie perfetta, è stata: "You are such a douche!".
  Ma questi sono i personaggi di Edith, e la amo per questo. Proprio per il loro arrivare troppo tardi, andare incontro all'infelicità, cercare di rimediare e inevitabilmente uscirne sconfitti. Newland, Newland, gli piace tanto pensare di essere, in fondo, diverso dalla vecchia New York, invece ne è il prodotto più perfetto. Sono d'accordo con la breve introduzione a questa edizione (spoilerosa anzichenò e quindi da evitare se non si sta rileggendo) quando dice che L'età è molto meno duro, nel suo ritratto della società newyorchese, rispetto alla Casa della gioia, scritto quindici anni prima. Ci sarebbe da discutere se sia più disperato Newland Archer che segue alla perfezione il percorso che gli si para davanti (trovati un lavoro rispettabile ma non spezzarti la schiena, non è bon-ton; trova una bella ragazza di buona famiglia e di buone maniere; amala ma non troppo, "placidamente"; sposala, fai il viaggio di nozze in Europa; stabilisciti in una bella casa al di sotto della Trentaquattresima Strada), oppure Lily Bart, che sbaglia tutto lo sbagliabile nel frenetico tentativo di ritrovare il suo posto in società. In ogni caso, per chi resta, alla fine, c'è solo il rimpianto.

  I read this first as a teenager. Makes more sense when you're a grown-up, and it's deliciously vicious and cruel under the "costume drama" façade. Loved the descriptions of the stifling NY society. Oh, by the way, it's one of the rare books which were transposed into a movie with perfect results.

E' arrogante, supponente, e nonostante si erga a paladino dell'indipendenza delle donne contro la chiusura e lo snobbismo dell'altà società newyorkese, il suo comportamento si adegua perfettamente allo stereotipo che tentava di rifuggire. Quasi 400 pagine di aria fritta, in cui il lettore spera ardentemente nel riscatto del protagonista, invano.
