He holds the secret that can end the world.

The truth: Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life.

The records show that he died in 1418.

But his tomb is empty.

The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it.

Sometimes legends are true.

And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

    Creative and exciting

I would actually rate this a 3.5. It focuses more on fast paced action than character development and that does harm the story. I can't really figure out if the twins are meant to be the main characters or not. Nicholas Flamel, Scatty, and John Dee are far more interesting than the twins (who are ki ... (continue)

I can't really figure out if the twins are meant to be the main characters or not. Nicholas Flamel, Scatty, and John Dee are far more interesting than the twins (who are kind of boring and stereotyped). I absolutely loved the historical and mythological details in the book though. Recommended for readers who love the YA fantasy/history genre.

  • Fast paced and unputdownable

Short chapters and cliff-hanging endings. An undemanding enjoyable read. Bags of magical adventure, lots of interesting characters, including key historical figures who turn out to be either immortals or from the Elder Race. Well imagined alternate realities. Good for readers looking to "what next?" after Harry Potter. First in a six book sequence.

  • I didn't like the style of this book at all. I'm not super fond of the characters either. But by page 50 or so the story picks up, and it does keep you turning pages from then on.

  • I read this book through from cover to cover in one day. I was home sick, and it definitely took my mind off of not feeling well.
