I enjoyed all the anti-god propoganda, but felt that for the last book it was incredibly slow to get going. I missed Lyra for the first 200 pages during which she was asleep and figured that could have gone much quicker. I was a little dissapointed that the rebellion went no where (as wars on heaven always tend to do in books).

I felt this book lacked something in comparison to the previous two. Pulman's anti-Christian sentiment comes out more strongly in this book, and I found his vision for saving the universe ultimately downbeat and uninspiring.

As far as fantasy series go, I found this trilogy to be more thought provoking than most while not having nearly as well-planned of a fantasy universe. Religion is a central topic to the series and the book sask some very interesting questions about Biblical myths. In asking whatever has happened to angel sentiments since the initial revolt, Pullman treads on some good uncovered ground. Some of the oomph is lost in the background of how this universe ticks, many of those explanations seem rushed and contrived.

  • As for the previous two chapters, I had to fight with evil morning shifts and hours on buses to read this book, as it's been gripping me since the first page. Total awesomeness, full stop.

I was told in before reading that the series became dark, I just never thought it would go in that direction from the first book.
